The Monday Show Low Down (Or “Jesus Has Got My Water Heater's Back”)

It’s interesting how the east side music scene has shifted in LA over the last nine months. I mean, I’ve been noticing that as acts like The Silversun Pickups and many of the other excellent Ship Collective acts have gotten bigger and started playing here less, a new batch of bands have started to fill in the void.

Groups like The Deadly Syndrome, The Airborne Toxic Event, and Great Northern appear to be gaining a lot of momentum, for example. And The Happy Hollows, Radars to the Sky, and Tigers Can Bite You clearly have that potential or are doing it, too.

It’s nice to see that what’s going on musically here right now isn’t just going to die on the vine locally as some of the acts receive well-deserved national attention. I mean, sharing is great and all, but I still want to be able to walk down to Spaceland and catch some an excellent show, you know?

Again, it’s an exciting time to live here. At the risk of sounding like some breathless blogger with an over-developed sense of importance of his local music scene, I think that someday people will write books about what’s happening here right now. It's that fucking good.

Anyway, here’s what this week is looking like, show-wise.

Monday, May 7
- Bodies of Water, The Western States Motel, No Little Kindness, & Seasons @ The Echo (Free)
- Gliss, Oakley Hall, & McCarthy Trenching @ Spaceland (Free)
- The High Society, Magic and Rattles, The Blessing, and Neimo @ The Silver Lake Lounge (Free)
- Michael de Winter, Planes for Spaces, Secretary Bird, & Chase Frank @ Safari Sam’s
- Midnight Movies @ Amoeba Music (Free – 7PM)
- Bonfire Madigan & Ht Heartache @ Bordello

DECISION:
Seeing Bodies of Water and The Western States Motel on the same stage is pretty tempting, but I’d like to check out the >Gliss residency, too.

Tuesday, May 8
- The Monolators, Shiloe, Repeater, & The Amateurs @ The Scene (Glendale)
- The Finches, Big Search, & The Bushes @ The Silver Lake Lounge
- Sage Francis @ Amoeba Music (Free – 7PM)
- KXLU Presents: Pleaseeasaur, Leonard Mills, The Abe Lincoln Story, Quazar, & The Bamboozled @ Spaceland
- The Front & masterslave @ Safari Sam’s (Free)
- Black Rebel Motorcycle Club @ The Wiltern

DECISION:
My friend Jed is all about The Finches, but the group of bands playing out at The Scene is pretty interesting, too.

Wednesday, May 9
- Sabrosa Purr @ Molly Malone’s
- Terrors, Fierce, & Layer @ Echo Curio Gallery
- Wolfmother @ The Grove (Anaheim)
- Suns Lungs, Thee More Shallows, & Secret Society of the Sonic Six @ The Echo
- Dub Club @ The EchoPlex
- Indie 103.1 presents CLUB NME w/ Mother Mother @ Spaceland
- Wake Up Incinerate, The Karabal Nightlife, The Soft Hands, & Death to Anders @ The Silver Lake Lounge

DECISION:
I’m headed to The Silver Lake Lounge. I’ve heard great things about The Soft Hands live and want to catch the other acts playing there that night, as well.

Thursday, May 10
- John Vanderslice & St. Vincent @ Largo
- The Prix & The Shys @ The Roxy (Free - All Ages)
- Up The Empire, Starlite Desperation, Pistols Will Air, & Icebird @ Spaceland
- The Youngs & Ralph Covert and The Bad Examples @ The Silver Lake Lounge
- KXLU 88.9 Presents The Rolling Blackouts, Peachfuzz, The Make Out Party, & Sweet Evil @ The Echo
- The Ghost Lullaby, The Love Dolls, & Zombies Ate My Nation @ Safari Sam’s
- Jessica Fichot, Laura Weinbach, & Vermillion Lies @ Bordello
- Keane @ The Greek

DECISION:
Looks like I’m finally going to Largo in Hollywood ... something which has been cost prohibitive to me in the past. I’ve heard SF’s John Vanderslice is good live and Gorilla vs. Bear has talked up St. Vincent.

Friday, May 11
- Lavender Diamond @ Amoeba Music (Free – 7PM)
- Delta Spirit @ The Echo
- Jimmy Tamborello of Dntel @ Amoeba Music (Free – 8PM)
- Thailand, Buffalo Roam, & LoveLifeFire @ El Cid
- The Autumns & Sugarplastic @ Spaceland
- Dinosaur Jr @ The Troubadour

DECISION:
I’m such a fan of Thailand that I feel obliged to go see them play every chance I get. If I didn’t work so late, I’d try like hell to go to the Lavender Diamond in-store at Amoeba, too.

Saturday, May 12
- Sunday Drivers CD Release Party w/ The VLA @ Maude Carrin Boutique and Gallery
- Infinity (Female fronted tribute to Journey) @ Spaceland
- Castledoor @ The Hotel Café
- Dragstripp 66 @ Echoplex
- Ass & Titties present Beaver Fever w/ DJ Assault + DJs Dark Alley, Blu Jems, Pube$, & Haycock @ The Echo
- Bedtime For Toys & Von Iva @ The Scene (Glendale)
- Dinosaur Jr @ The Troubadour

DECISION:
I caught Castledoor last week at Spaceland and the lead singer had such a great voice and put on such an excellent performance that it shut everyone in the place right the fuck up when they started playing. Love to see them again.

Sunday, May 13
- The Henry Clay People, One Trick Pony, The Karabal Nightlife, The Transmissions, & Sister Cities @ The Eagle Rock Bowling and Drinking Club at All-Star Lanes
- Modest Mouse, Man Man, & Love As Laughter @ The Greek
- Grand Ole Echo w/ Randy Weeks, Dave Gleason, The Dukes of Sunset, & Fish in a Barrel (Patio) @ The Echo
- Part Time Punks 2 Year Anniversary Party w/ Ariel Pink & Softboiled Eggies @ The Echo
- Dinosaur Jr @ The Troubadour

DECISION:
This is one of the best line-ups I’ve seen for The Eagle Rock Bowling and Drinking Club yet. All this, plus free shoe rentals.

That’s it! Did I miss anything? Please lemme know.
