The Monday Show Low Down (Or “This Song Has Been Deleted By The Artist”)

Last Friday, my buddy Paul in San Francisco IMed me that he was heading to see Voxtrot with my best friend Jason at Bimbo’s -- an old burleseque that's one of the most gorgeous venues I’ve ever been in.

I told him he HAD to head early to see Division Day open, because they’ve been one of my favorite LA bands since I first heard their Mean Way In EP. And to make sure to coral the perpetually tardy Jason, too. Doors were at 9:00 and Division Day were on at 9:30. He said he’d try.

At nine, I was on my way to dinner with the lady friend and called Jason to berate him. He said he had to go out for a drink with some couple what just got engaged and was just getting into the shower. That pretty much meant there was no way he was catching any of Division Day… Maybe not even Voxtrot.

But later that night, I got an IM from Paul that read: “Division Day just rocked my face off. I <3 them.”

Got one out, at least...

Here’s a look at what shows are going on in LA this week.

DECISION:
Tonight’s show with the amazing line-up of Vampire Weekend, Princeton, and Grand Ole Party at The Echo is sold-out (there might be some tickets at the door -- call to check), but the quite good and loud In Waves are at The Viper Room, if you don’t mind a drive. (There’s cheap parking directly across the street.)

DECISION:
Anyone have anything they really feel strongly about for Wednesday night? Big Search (the other band from Foreign Born’s lead, Matt) and Kind Hearts and Coronets are the most interesting acts to me.

Oh, geesh. Did you hear about this show with Sea Wolf, Spoon, and Pinback over at Avalon?!

The Grand Ole Echo w/ its faux Hee Haw show also sounds pretty great. (Side-note: I have a pet theory that Hee Haw is the best stoner TV show ever, much the same way I contend that Babe The Pig is the best stoner film…)

And did you see Spaceland On Ice is starting back up?

DECISION:

Also interesting on Friday night are old Chicago power pop punk act Naked Raygun at The Knitting Factory, Rademacher’s Malcolm Sosa at Pehrspace, and The Monolators and more at Mr T’s Bowl. (And I know the KXLU kids heart Jeremy Jay.)

That Friday night in general is just a musical explosion. You could spread the shows going on that night across a week without missing a trick.
