Band of the Week: The Afternoons

You probably know how singer/bassist Alex Church split off from LA pop supergroup Irving to work on his own act Sea Wolf full-time -- they’re playing tonight at The Echo, incidentally -- but you might not have heard of project band The Afternoons formed from some of the other members, singers from Dirt Bird, and a former drummer from Earlimart.

To my knowledge, they’ve only played out once so far, an evening at El Cid several months ago, and it was rather amazing. They had people dancing, which, jesus christ superstar, is nearly impossible on the East Side, least of all at a band’s first show. It was a performance worthy of a pop act with a lot of years under its belt, which I guess is largely unsurprising given the backgrounds of the people involved.

The Afternoons don’t have any tracks available for purchase or download yet, so in meantime, you can visit their myspace page to hear what to expect from their eventual release.

I have it on good authority that they've been doing some recording at The Boat recently. Their El Cid show was great, I'm looking forward to hearing more.
