The Monday Show Low Down (Or “You Can't Win”)

Alright, did everyone else hear that Andrew Bird was playing with The Decemberists and Band of Horses last Saturday night at The Hollywood Bowl? Because that would’ve been the tipping point to make me go and it’s almost kinda criminal that I didn’t know… I mean, jeesh, what a frigging line-up… So, I mean, how was it?

Damn, I hate to miss anything good. Anyway... let’s take a look at this week:

Monday, July 9
- Eskimo Hunter, Secret 6, & Mere Mortals @ Spaceland (FREE)
- In Waves, War Tapes, & Broad Daylight @ The Viper Room
- 5 O'Clock Somewhere, Frankel, Ollin, & Boweevil @ The Echo (FREE)
- Spindrift, The Upsidedown, & Highway @ The Roxy
- Love Story Hero, Jessica Lombard, Emily Tessmer, & Beau Davidson @ Genghis Cohen
- Ambrose Akinmusire , Gerald Clayton, Kevin Kanner, and Tim Green @ The Mint (FREE)
- Karabal Nightlife @ Mr T’s Bowl (FREE)
- Baxter House, Ex-Paladin, The Devil, & Nemesys @ The Scene
- Layabout @ Tangier
- Doubleplusgood, Moothart, Honor Bed, & I.E. @ Pehrspace
- Light FM, Peter Walker, Saint Motel, & Icebird @ The Silver Lake Lounge (FREE)

DECISION:
There’s a lot of great fun to be had again this Monday night, free or otherwise… Light FM, In Waves, Spindrift, Eskimo Hunter, and Frankel… It’s a shame that each of them are playing at separate venues.

Tuesday, July 10
- Rumspringa, Hand Over Heart, & Luna is Honey @ The Echo
- Who Rides the Tiger, The Sleeping Sea King, & Iron Of Odra @ The Scene
- Wooden Nickle @ The Silver Lake Lounge
- Goodbye Valentine & Matcli @ The Troubadour
- Faceless Werewolves, The Waking Hours, The Amadans, The Clear Keep, & Chop Suzy @ Safari Sam’s (FREE)
- Simon Dawes @ The Greek
- Bobb Bruno, Bad Dudes, Animal, & Archaeopteryx @ Pehrspace
- Buddy, Tod Adrian Wisenbaker, & Erin Armstrong @ Bordello
- The Klaxons @ The El Rey

DECISION:
I’ve got nothing on Tuesday. Anyone have any recommendations? (Check out the comments section below.)

I know my friend Rachel swears by Rumspringa.

Wednesday, July 11
- The Prix @ El Cid
- Indie 103.1 presents CLUB NME @ Spaceland
- Ninja Academy, Die Die Die, Valley Arena, & Meho Plaza @ The Silver Lake Lounge
- Dub Club presents: Bongo Herman, Sangie Davis, Jahmali, Jahmel @ Echoplex
- Faceless Werewolves & More @ The Scene
- Broken Remotes @ Bordello
- Pop Noir @ The Derby
- Realicide, Kevin Shields, Gabbertree, Eustachian, & Tik///Tik @ The Smell
- Emma Burgess @ Tangier

DECISION:
The Prix are fun and have been playing songs from their upcoming EP at this residency -- and El Cid has the weirdest, most Escher-like stairs in town.

Thurday, July 12
- The Little Ones & The Pity Party @ UCLA Hammer Museum
- Hecuba, Lion of Panjshir, Restaurant, & Nathan Pelkey @ Bordello
- The Sharp Things & The Switch @ The Mint
- Rocky Voltato @ The Troubadour
- Patrick Park & Emma Burgess @ Spaceland
- Rock Insider's Indie Schmindie! w/ The Monolators, The Front, Wait Think Fast, & The Transmissions @ The Scene (Glendale)
- Repeater, Briertone, & Shiloe @ The Knitting Factory
- Dr. Dog, Delta Spirit, & The Teeth @ The Echo
- Low End Theory w/ Daedelus, Blank Blue, Ozen @ Echoplex
- Electric Children & Crash Hot @ The Derby
- 8-Bit, Double Naught Spy Car, Nibiru, & More @ Safari Sam’s
- Ahleuchatistas, Upsilon Acrux, Sleeping People, & The Littlest Viking @ The Smell
- Two Sheds, Everest, Jackpot, & Chairlift @ The Silver Lake Lounge

DECISION:
It’s a night of hard choices… The Little Ones and The Pity Party is an army of two great bands at The Hammer Museum. RFSL favorites The Switch are venturing out of the east side to play at The Mint. Rock Insider has a really rock solid line-up over at The Scene with The Monolators, The Front, Wait Think Fast, and The Transmissions.

But Sacramento’s Two Sheds are performing with Everest -- who people keep telling me I need to check out -- at The Silver Lake Lounge, too. And, well, Two Sheds are responsible for one of my favorite albums of last year…

Friday, July 13
- The 88 @ The Troubadour
- Cuban Cowboys, Cydney Robinson, Rosey, Contramano, & Regime Noir @ Tangier
- David Vandervelde and the Monstation House Band, Blitzen Trapper, & Nico Stai @ Spaceland
- Icarus Line @ El Cid
- Shitting Glitter & Death by Doll @ Pehrspace
- Tex and The Horsehead, Mike Watt and The Missingmen, & more @ Safari Sam’s
- Club Underground w/ Lemon Sun @ The Echoplex
- Winetasting @ The Echo Patio
- Trans Am @ The Beauty Bar
- The Muslims, The Soft Hands, A.M., @ Anchors For Architects @ The Smell
- The Peelers, Thee L.A. Gentlemen Callers, Angus Khan, & Vagrant Vinny @ The Scene
- Os Mutantes @ The El Rey

DECISION:
There’s a buncha bands I’ve been meaning to check out at Spaceland, but then Long Beach’s The Soft Hands are rad, and then what’s this about Trans Am at … um … the Beauty Bar?

Saturday, July 14
- The Devils Romantics, Divisadero, Meredith Meyer, & Love, Christine @ Pehrspace
- Persephone’s Bees & Something For Rockets @ The Troubadour
- Jessica Fichot @ Amoeba Music
- Howlin' Rain, Citay, & The Moon Upstairs @ The Echo
- Ponce De Leon, Guam, & Duchess of Tek @ The Scene
- DiGiTS, Cryptacize, I Think I Did Something Wrong, & Duhkha @ The Smell
- The Natural Disasters, Novi Split, & Franklin for Short @ Crane's Tavern
- The Rentals, Goldenboy, & Kyle Chipman @ Spaceland

DECISION:
I heart Pehrspace because it’s so small and punk rock and BYOB, besides having a band crush on The Devils Romantics. (Even though my former print mag heart wants to put an apostrophe in their name.)

Sunday, July 15
- Little Radio Summer Camp w/ TBA @ The Little Radio Downtown Warehouse
- Café Tecuba & Groove Armada @ The Hollywood Bowl
- John Gold, Christopher Blue, & Ethan Roberts @ Tangier
- Fugazi Tribute @ Spaceland
- Skates & Rays, The Chiggers, & Present Tense @ The Scene (FREE)
- The Northern Two, The Hectors, & The Coral Sea @ The Eagle Rock Bowling & Drinking Club at All-Star Lanes

DECISION:
Again, I’d recommend going to Little Radio Summer Camp for outdoor fun during the day. (Not sure who is playing yet, but it’s worth the door for the margaritas, Guitar Hero 2, beach chairs, and all the rest.) And then at night, you should go to The Eagle Rock Bowling & Drinking Club at All-Star Lanes for The Hectors, The Northern Two, and more.
